Breakfast is what gets me out of bed every single morning, and that’s not because I’m not excited about the rest of my life (cos I really am) it’s just because I really really love breakfast. There is no way I am going to lie around in bed while brekkie is calling my name, as soon as I reach consciousness I am ready to eat my favourite foods in the world. I have been like that my entire life and when I was little I would wake up earlier than anyone in the fam and be ready for a beastie bowl of muesli that wouldn’t know what hit it after I was done with it.
My current top five favourite breakfast foods are:
1) Mini-wheats cereal. Preferably original, but I am willing to be flexible. Get ready for a very tragic story- there used to be a different type of mini wheats in NZ which were kind of like the “centres” variety they have now but without the frosting. The texture was also chewier somehow. These were my favourite cereal ever. I ate them every day at least once for maybe three years. Then suddenly, without warning, the mean people in charge of important stuff like that DISCONTINUED them. I’m getting emotional just thinking about it. I went out immediately and bought ten boxes (for realsies, I am on top of these kind of things), but eventually those came to an end and I had my last glorious bite on the 4th of September 2014 in NZ. It is very hard for me to talk about this but I wanted to acknowledge the beautiful space they held in my life. I am now on board with the frosted variety but not a day goes by when I don’t mourn for my beloved old school mini wheats.
2) Any other cereal. This:
Are incredible but I generally do not discriminate.
3) French toast, it is the shizzle. I love the bread to be super thick and I love maple syrup and berries and potentially bananas too.
4) Pancakes. I am fussy about my pancakes and like them to be thick and chewy (I’m not sure if that’s quite the right word for what I’m trying to say though). While I would not say no to a crepe I am definitely more of a pancakes girl, crepes always take me three seconds to finish and then I am upset that I have no food left.
5) Porridge. I loooooove me some thick whole grain oats with fruit and maybe some chia seeds or almond butter if I’m feeling fancy. I ate this every day on Salt Spring Island and it was phenomenal every time.
As you can see from my top five I really go for the sweet breakfasts, they just really float my boat and I can never seem to deviate. Having said that I love omelettes and breakfast potatoes and toast with avocado etc too, it’s just that they don’t have quite the same place in my heart as the above beauties do.
Also, breakfast is also not over for me until I have coffee. Preferably two cups. Man it is night time now but I seriously want some breakfast again, oopsy.
