The one with the running tips for beginners

Having talked about being lazy recently I feel like balancing that out (I’m a libra ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) with talking about running. Just roll with it. I wish everyone loved running cos then we could all run together and then all have an awesome post run high together and life would be beautiful. Having said that, running is HARD, and I definitely don’t love it every day and it also took me a while to grow to love it. In the beginning I did it because I knew it was a good workout and I was a little obsessed with being healthy but now I really love the feeling, in particularย how I feel afterwards. Let’s pretend this is how Iย look when I run

When actually I look like this
And this when I stretch:

(I love running in Sydney in case that isn’t obvious ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

These are my running tips for beginners because I feel like it’s very each to start out and think oh my goodness what am I doing this hurts like a b**ch and why would I ever do it again? I often feel like that for the first half hour of my run so no worries guys, it’s normal.

I think the main thing I learned when I started running was that it’s just really important to go slowly because running is hard. I started off running for one minute and walking for one minute for at the most 20mins at a time. And the one minute of running was like a gentle jog. Every time you do it you can up the amount of time of running eg instead of 1minute do 1minute 30seconds. There’s no point starting too hard cos you’ll hate it and feel like you’re gonna die the whole time. If you start gently then you’re way more likely to like it and you can easily build up your running stamina with time. Secondly it makes a huuuuge difference what you eat/drink beforehand. Eating a piece of fruit eg a banana or orange makes it so much easier cos your body uses the sugar and you’ll have a lot more energy. It’s best to eat that at least half an hour beforehand. I also like to drink a coffee beforehand cos that gives me more energy too- basically anything that will make it easier is awesome. This may feel amazing when you run or it may try to come up 67 times and make you want to die, try it and see ๐Ÿ™‚

I also find it really helps to focus on certain things before and during the run- I try not to overthink it before and just go out and do it- otherwise I’ll talk myself out of it. Also if I’m not really in the mood I just tell myself I’ll run for 10mins and come back if I don’t feel like it- that’s a win win cos a 10min run is awesome anyway and usually I feel like doing longer once I’m out.

I also think about how awesome I’m gonna feel after doing it- it’s a super nice feeling to feel like you achieved your goal of doing the run. During the run I use some mantras- for example for some reason it really helps me to remind myself that it’s not supposed to feel easy. Then I’m like oh ok it’s normal that I am tired/puffed/sweating like a beast. I also like to distract myself and think about nice things in my life/stuff I need to organise/plan essays etc or just zone out and listen to music. I like saving music I LOVE for when I’m running cos then it’s like a fun treat to listen to it.

One last thing that might be helpful is to be aware of your form- your foot should land mid foot, not heel first. It might kindof feel like you’re running on the balls of your feet in the beginning. It can also help to take deep breaths if you can cos you won’t feel as puffed. Refuel when you’re done! Pretty much the best part ๐Ÿ™‚

These are the most basic tips ever but I feel like maybe they’re so obvious they’re not obvious if you know what I mean ๐Ÿ™‚ and these all help me every time I run so are valuable pearls of wisdom that I would only ever share with super cool people, you are welcome.
What are your tips for starting a new activity like running?ย

I agree with all of those tips! Especially the one about starting out. It’s hard, and it definitely takes time to work up to any amount of distance. But stick with it, it will be worth it!

  2. When I first started out running more than a few minutes at a time, I was in probably 3rd grade (which feels like a different lifetime ago!) But I did the walk + run method and gradually built up to running the whole time!

    • Wow you started so early!! It is definitely good to build up to it right? I remember the first time I ran for half and hour and I was exhausted! Now half an hour is a short run for me ๐Ÿ™‚ it definitely gets easier!

  3. Great tips for starting out! And I’m a libra too:)

  4. Great tips! It’s definitely important to start slow, and to stick with it!

  5. Great tips!
Stretching is something that I didn’t do when I first started running and I got a lot of injuries because of it. I won’t be making that mistake again.
