The one with mini mindful meditations and minion movie

Too much alliteration? Nahhhhh.

I saw this on Pinterest (aka the thing that is going to ruin my academic career) and it got me thinking about my meditation practice:

(Random note- I am addicted to my shower right now- there were some issues with it when I first moved in and so I am making up for the stress of that by basking in its glory for a little bit longer than usual- plus it has this rain from the ceiling and walls thingy which is pretty much the best invention ever).

Maybe it’s weird, but while I do think about myself as someone who meditates, for me that doesn’t mean I sit in meditation every day. I meditate during my yoga practice, I often do a meditation run, and I spend different times of every day focusing on mindfulness meditation. I am a big fan of the “do what you can and don’t worry about the rest approach” and for me this works best because otherwise I am super lazy and don’t end up doing it at all.

I love to turn off my music when I’m walking to work or whatever and listen to my breathing and take in my surroundings from an internal place of stillness. I also like to practice mindful meditation with my coffee by really focusing on each step of making it and drinking it only thinking about the coffee and how it tastes and feels and smells.

Running is a major way that I meditate- listening to my breath, my footsteps, noticing the way my body feels to run and the air on my face etc. The combination of the runners high and the calm of having just meditated – be prepared to look pretty darn blissed out and dazed, maybe don’t do this before a business meeting 🙂

Here are two awesome articles if you want some legit info on how to make meditation a part of your run:

Yeah, I kinda adore MindBodyGreen.

Finally, one of my fave quotes about mindfulness:

“Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources for insight, transformation, and healing.” –  Jon Kabat-Zinn

And a whole bunch of quotes like that on one of my fave websites:

On another note, I have to tell you the most exciting news of my week and possibly of my entire life. I saw the minion movie! I have been waiting a LONG time for this (thanks to my boss who told me it was coming out in January… It’s been a long six+ months) and it beyond fulfilled all my expectations. I seriously want to go see it again already. The adorableness was off the charts, the whole theatre was laughing, and I really think they need to make a sequel to it like right now.

Okay so I know that any other news after that is just gonna be boring but I will attempt to power through anyway.
I had an awesome winter run/workout this morning that felt good and sweaty and led me to this random park with workout equipment meaning I felt obliged to crank out some sit ups, planks, and push ups (yeah, still working on those. They’re getting better slowly!). Also I’ve said it before but Sydney’s abundance of water coolers is so cool (HA). Every runners dream, a water cooler exactly when you really really need it.

There was also a gorgeous purple winter sunset in my new hood:

And a veggielicious dinner:

P.S. It is so weird that I am in winter and most of you guys are in summer! If you feel overly hot you are welcome read my blog and feel better after seeing my cool weather pics, I am so selfless I know 🙂

What is one word that sums up your week? -MINIONS!!!

Plans for the weekend?

Do you meditate? What sort of meditation do you practice?

  1. One word that sums up my weekend: ADVENTURES! And it’s so crazy to me that you’re in winter now. Every day this week has been around a high of 100 degrees F! I’ll have to live vicariously through you 🙂

    • Ooooh adventures are the best!! Extensive details needed please! 😉 haha the season thing is super weird right? I have to say, I find the mild Australian winter a lot easier to deal with than the brutal Australian summer where I sweat every second of the day and burn but never get a tan! :s

Meditation can be done in many different ways.
Sitting in a cave in the Himalayas for months or years is one extreme.
Taking a deep breath to enjoy the present moment is another.
We can use mindfulness to relax, improve our grades, or as meditation to change our selves.
    Enjoy the running!

    • Absolutely! And the cave in the Himalayas thing is slightly less doable for me personally than taking some deep breaths during the day 🙂 Now bring on those good grades! 😉 enjoy your day Sandy, and those nice deep present moment enhancing breaths!

  4. “run the mile you are in”. I LOVE THAT!

Oh, and I blame Pinterest for my grades at uni – I was obsessed with it.

    • Totally! It’s so much harder to run when I’m thinking “I still have x number of miles to go!” Eek!
Ahhhhh yeah Pinterest is gonna destroy me. I don’t even know how to use it properly yet but I LOVE it 😍

Wonderful thoughts about how to meditate without a zafu in sight- I do the shower meditation thing and my husband does it with coffee! Water coolers, though? You have to learn to call them ‘bubblers’ now you’re in Oz!

    • Oh very cool! I felt like a badass yogi doing it with coffee rather than tea so I’m glad your hubby does too! Three months during my yoga course without coffee means that I am still making up for it a year later by enjoying it every single day 🙂
Ooh bubblers?? So cute,I didnt know that! I really need to work on my Aussie slang! 🙂

My word of the week is coffee!! I’ve been trying to drink less of it – but lately I’ve been drinking more of it!

I’m taking it easy this weekend – hopefully catching up on my sleep (and drinking less coffee LOL) 🙂

    • I love me my coffee too! The minute I try to cut down on something like that, I crave it even more haha. I bet you need a lot of sleep after doing a 50k, that is so incredible! Enjoy your much deserved rest! 🙂

One word to sum up my past weekend is “mud”. More on that later… and this week, “birthday boy” (well, two words).
My family can’t wait to see the Minions movie! Lucky you, it’s not here yet!

    • That is sooooo weird that it came out here first, usually we are way later on these things! Ooooh mud, I am intrigued! Birthdays are the best, sounds like it’s gonna be a great week! 🙂

Those articles are fantastic!! Running is my meditation time too and I do the same kinds of things as you do. It’s amazing how something so active can get me into such a calm state sometimes. 🙂

Running is also my meditation (I accidentally typed “medication” which I suppose is also true LOL). I get a little twitchy w/out it! Thanks for sharing the articles!
